[Beta] Release: Evolve Client 1.5.3

Posted: Jun 17 '13 at 8:54pm • Author: dreijer
Hey testers! We're kicking off this week with a kickass beta release. Along with a few bug fixes, this update includes Intel Quick Sync acceleration for broadcasting -- available on most recent Intel CPUs -- and a solution for the frequent game disconnects experienced when playing Civilization V in Evolve's party system. Read on for the full changelog.

Full Changelog
  • Added support for Intel's Quick Sync, a hardware accelerated video encoding technology. If your machine sports an Intel CPU from the Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, or Haswell families, you should notice a significant performance improvement while broadcasting with Evolve.
  • Improved video quality of broadcasts for game scenes involving a high degree of motion, such as when turning your character around in World of Warcraft.
  • Fixed frequent disconnects in Civilization V and its expansion when playing LAN games via Evolve's party system. The issue stems from choices made by the developers in how they implemented their multiplayer code, but we've identified and implemented a fix that works around the issue. Make sure you tell your friends!
  • Fixed an issue that caused an error dialog to be shown when starting a game on Windows XP.
  • Fixed an issue that caused a crash if another instance of the client was launched while the client was already running.

Hopefully support for AMD's solution for hardware-accelerated video encoding can be implemented at some point :) Edit: Or even better; perhaps some OpenCL solution

AMD support isn't terribly likely in the near future--our encoder is provided by Intel as part of the Intel Media SDK. AMD also seems to have largely lost the race for desktop CPUs, unless they improve their performance in short order. OpenCL is a bit more interesting, I think, especially since the frames being encoded are already on the GPU.

Well, happily, there's still some performance to squeeze out of strictly software encoding. The latest beta channel update actually should be somewhat faster for everyone, independent of Quick Sync support. It is a bit lame that AMD hasn't been able to quite muster a new offense against Intel's offerings. The glory days of the Athlon 64 are so long ago... and Intel doesn't necessarily seem to be doing much more than sitting pretty atop its desktop performance perch as it figures out how to deal with ARM in the mobile space.

If I understand right, AMD has some Stream SDK thing that can allow for GPU encoding; not entirely sure if it's proprietary though or if it's actually OpenCL. Edit: I believe this was what I meant: http://developer.amd.com/tools-and-sdks/heterogeneous-computing/amd-accelerated-parallel-processing-app-sdk/ which does seem to use OpenCL.

Just restart your Evolve client to automatically update to the latest version. If you don't have the client installed at all, you can get it here: https://www.evolvehq.com/client

Hi, me and my friend just switched to the beta-client. The Civ V disconnects sadly still happen. But thanks to you for trying to get into this. Greets.

Hit me up in the #evolve group chat and we can have a chat about this. It's working fine for lots of other people. :)
